File Size Warning Error in VLE
When importing videos or photos into a new page or when attempting to export a lesson or game as a SCORM Package I get an error saying "Sorry the file is too large. The maximum file size is set by your administrator."
To increase the permitted file sizes you need to edit the vle_config.ini, a configuration file. This is located in the "configuration" folder, which by default has the following path:
C:\Program Files\Birchfield\Common files\Configuration\vle_config.ini
Open this file with notepad (or any plain text editor) and about two-thirds down the file there is a line:
new_content_max_filesize = 4MB
you can change it to any value you like: 10MB, 20MB.
This will change the permitted size of the graphics and video that can be imported into a new page created within VLE Content Editor.
You can also change:
final_content_max_filesize = 32MB
which is the final size of the lesson exported as a SCORM pack. Ideally, this should match your maximum upload limit for your VLE.
Save and close the file, then restart the application.
This file will update both VLE Content Editor and VLE Games Pack and Question Editor provided that both applications are installed to the same location.

Early trial expiry - VLE Question Editor
This issue only effects some VLE Question Editor applications sent out between 14th September 2009 and 2nd October 2009. The application will have a version number of 2.08 or 2.09.
After a software update, it was found that some VLE Question Editor trials were timing out immediately after installation. This issue is caused because the VLE Question Editor software cannot connect to the Internet, either because the installation machine is not connected to the Internet or because it accesses the Internet via a Web Proxy. This issue has been fixed in later versions, but there is a fix available for anyone currently attempting to evaluate these versions of the software:
This issue will be resolved if you can allow the computer to access the internet (but not through a Proxy server). If this is not practical, then please follow the steps below.
First you will need to download the behav.cxt file from here.
This file will need to go into a particular folder. By default you will find it in
C:\Programs Files\Birchfield\Question Editor\Software\csts\
or the equivalent folder if you specified a different instalation location.
You will need to replace the exiting behav.cxt in that folder but you are advised to firstly make a backup of the existing behav.cxt file (by copying it to another location).
Run VLE Question Editor and it should now display the correct trial information.
If you decide to purchase VLE Question Editor, please contact technical support to obtain the latest version of VLE Question Editor which will connect to the Internet via a proxy server.

Proxy Server set up for Content Editor and Question Editor
This page only applies to VLE Content Editor from Version 2.12 or later and VLE Question Editor Version 2.10 or later.
In order to simplify the activation process for customers we have developed an on-line activation system. In order for this to function effectively VLE Content Editor and VLE Question Editor need to have access to the Internet. If the software cannot connect to the Internet when required it will provide a warning dialogue box stating this.
If Internet access to your school is provided through a proxy server then you will need to insert the proxy server details into the VLE_Config.ini file.
This file is located within the folder
../Birchfield/Common Files/Configuration/
by default this is located in the C:/Program Files directory.
Please open this file with a text editor such as Notepad.exe and find the section and complete as required.
; If you use a proxy server, set use_proxy = 1. Then complete ; the rest of the settings. If your proxy server requires ; authentication then set proxy_auth = 1 and proceed to fill ; out the username and password. use_proxy = 0 proxy_type = HTTP proxy_IP = 255.255.255.0 proxy_auth = 0 proxy_un = example_domain/example_username proxy_pw = example_password proxy_port = 8080
Remember to save the file and then restart the relevant Birchfield application. The dialogue box should no longer appear and any registration changes (such as authorising the application, content packs or question sets) will be made.
If you have any difficulty, please contact technical support for further advice.
